Brooklyn Law School seeks candidates for a newly created position of Director of Bar Programs within its overall Academic Success Program. We anticipate this individual starting employment no later than August 2022, with special consideration for candidates who can arrive before the July 2022 bar-exam cycle begins.
Reporting to the Director of the Academic Success Program, the Director of Bar Programs will:
• Oversee and teach bar-preparation courses and programs in the third-year curriculum and for recent graduates preparing for the bar; |
• Make periodic reports directly to the Dean and Vice Dean of the Law School on student bar preparation both before and during post-graduation bar preparation; • Train, hire, and oversee alumni small-group leaders and adjunct professors in the third-year early bar preparation course, as well as alumni bar coaches who work in post- graduation bar preparation programs; • Coordinate insights and communications from other offices (such as Vice Dean, Student Life, Housing, Financial Aid, Career Development, Diversity & Inclusion, Registrar) on student progress, with an eye towards directing support for bar takers to where it is needed; • Work with student leaders to promote peer support programming for bar takers; |
as well as those authorized to table on campus for student outreach; |
Applicants should articulate a clear vision for the future of Brooklyn Law School’s efforts to provide robust bar preparation for its students. The Director of Bar Programs must stay abreast of developments in the New York bar exam, develop and maintain a high level of knowledge about academic support and bar preparation programs, and have a critical eye for selecting strategic partners and personnel to contribute to the Academic Success Program’s bar exam |
initiatives. The Director of Bar Programs also advises the faculty and administration as to all bar |
preparation matters and will, alongside the Director of the Academic Success Program, make periodic reports about bar passage to stakeholders. |
Most notably, the Director of Bar Programs must have a keen understanding of academic engagement challenges with regard to the current generation of law students and a viable, thoughtful strategy for addressing them. This includes helping students who require accommodations on law school exams, pre-admission standardized exams such as the MPRE and New York Law Exam, and the bar examination. Moreover, the Director of Bar Programs must demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for working with students who seek or require academic enhancement. Accordingly, the Director of Bar Programs must possess the ability to build meaningful learning relationships with all students. The salary of the Director of Bar Programs will be commensurate with experience. At a minimum, candidates must possess a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school; bar |
admission; and at least three (3) years of experience in law teaching and/or bar preparation, preferably in an in-school bar-preparation or academic-success program (as academic-success faculty, staff, and/or as peer educator). This may be, depending on the candidate’s experience, either (a) a non-faculty administrative position or (b) an initial faculty appointment with the possibility of subsequent reappointments and potential eligibility to apply for an appointment on a long-term contract track. We are especially interested in candidates who will enhance the diversity of our community. The deadline for applications is April 22, 2022. Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and list of at least three (3) professional references who can attest to an applicant’s teaching ability and potential for future teaching excellence.
