Job Overview
Reporting to the Associate Program Director of Bar Support, the Assistant Program Director, Bar Support supports programming and information-sharing for students and alumni bar-takers related to successfully navigating the requirements of state bar examinations (“the bar”) and the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (“MPRE”). The Assistant Director provides assistance with monitoring learning outcomes, bar preparation activities to all students, and participates in other student retention activities as needed.
Job Description Summary
- Researching application processes and procedures for bar exams in multiple jurisdictions and compiling and disseminating the information in an accessible form.
- Creating and implementing in-person, hybrid, and recorded programs related to successfully applying to and taking the bar exam and MPRE.
- Crafting newsletters, handouts, website text, and other instructional information related to individual states’ bar exam requirements and MPRE.
- Counseling individual students on strategies to apply for and take the bar and MPRE successfully.
- Providing structured writing, organizational, and analytical assistance to current students and recent graduates, including through workshops and presentations.
- Gathering and analyzing data pertaining to bar passage rates, student performance, and the efficacy of program interventions.
- Generating reports and presentations delineating key insights, trends, and recommendations to enhance bar success support endeavors.
- Collaborating with relevant GW Law offices, student groups, state bar administrators, and other outside organizations.
- Overseeing student workers or fellows as needed.
- Being a resource to students, faculty, staff, and other interested parties on the NextGen Bar Exam; and teaching a skills course to upper-level law students.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- JD or Master’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g. MBA, MS in Counseling)
- Successful bar passage in a U.S. jurisdiction.
- 1+ years of experience in practicing law or engaging in writing or other instruction in an academic institution, law firm, or commercial bar preparation company desired.
- Prior experience with academic support and bar preparation strongly desired.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with and listen to people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- Experience with assessment and data collection.
- Experience counseling, coaching, or advising individuals, including peers or mentees, in navigating complex processes such as taking the bar exam or MPRE.
- Ability and interest in researching and understanding bar exam and MPRE trends.
- Experience creating and implementing educational programs.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work some nights and weekends.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities under deadlines.
