Last month, my school hosted Wellness Week with a variety of activities, alongside programming for Pro Bono Month. With the end of the semester in sight, but still a few weeks away, I was reminded that this is a good time to make sure we’re filling our own cups so we can keep showing up for others. It’s also a good time to make sure we aren’t living out the old saying, “Do as I say, not as I do.” Wellness isn’t just for students. It’s for us, too.
The Eight Dimensions of Wellness
I like to think about wellness through the eight dimensions of wellness: occupational, physical, emotional, social, financial, spiritual, intellectual, and environmental. These dimensions are connected, and they work together to help us live healthier lives. Each day, or even each week, I try to choose something that puts me first and gives me the rest and reset I need. That way, I can show up better for myself and for my students.
Below are some ways I’ve been intentional with each dimension, along with a question for you to consider.
Occupational
A few weeks ago, I shared some major keys from my conversation with Camesha Little. If you haven’t read it yet, go read it! That conversation inspired me to find the common thread in my own professional life. What do I keep coming back to when I think about who I want to be in the future? One answer is someone who uses my bar license to serve people who cannot afford representation. So I plan to be more intentional about volunteering with public interest organizations in my state.
What are your career goals, and what are you doing today, this month, or this year to move toward them?
Physical
Two months ago, I started Orangetheory Fitness. It has helped me stay active and set goals in each class, then work toward meeting them. Yes, I’ve noticed a difference in my body, and I’m getting stronger. I’ve also noticed that I’m challenging myself more each week, and I actually look forward to the intense workouts.
OTF isn’t for everyone, so what other ways can you fit physical activity into your schedule?
Emotional
I’m not seeing a therapist right now, but I know many people rely on therapy for their mental health. For me, it’s a lot of self-reflection and talking things out with different people. They probably wish they were getting paid for that support! I’m thankful for the people who give me space to show up honest and vulnerable about what’s really going on.
What conversations are you having that let you show up authentic and vulnerable?
Social
I’m working on being more social in both my personal and professional life. Professionally, I’ve been joining more Zoom collaborations with colleagues, and they have been so good for me. I also decided that LexCon would be a great way to stay connected and meet more people, so I’m really looking forward to the conference.
How can you be intentional about connecting with peers in this space?
Financial
Speaking of LexCon, I absolutely love AccessLex and its financial coaching. Our region has one of the best coaches, and I first connected with her as a law student. When she comes to town, I make sure to book one of her open meeting slots. It has been a game changer. Every few months, I get to share my financial wins and losses and talk through next steps.
How are you being financially responsible right now?
Spiritual
Everyone has their own beliefs. For me, though, I feel so much better when I go to church and read the Bible more. I don’t always make time for it, but when I do, I can see and feel the difference in my mood and mindset. It’s also a chance to be thankful for what I have while I keep working to grow.
How are you filling your spiritual cup this week, and how can you pause to think about how blessed you are?
Intellectual
This semester has been full of articles, blog posts, books, and podcasts for small group discussions, professional development, and personal growth.
What are you reading or listening to right now that’s challenging you to be a better version of yourself?
Environmental
Last but not least: environmental wellness. This could be as simple as a walk on your lunch break. I’m in Alabama, where the leaves are changing color and falling, and I’ve caught myself just sitting outside more. It’s been so good for me!
How are you getting outside and enjoying your surroundings?
Serving Ourselves, Too
As we serve others, let’s also serve ourselves. And if you’ll be at LexCon, I hope to see you there. Let’s connect!
