According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is “an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.” It also notes that the holiday is “rooted in the push to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.”
If you are reading this, you are likely connected to a law school in some capacity; student or employee or consultant, and may work in academic support or bar exam support. If you are an employee, take a breath! What is the one self-care thing you will do today? Step away from email? Get outside?
At the institutions I have been a part of, Labor Day was a good time for students, particularly 1L students to pause, regroup, and develop a plan. By this point, they have likely completed orientation and one to two weeks of classes. It is the pause needed to get organized, to reflect and to plan for the weeks ahead. But they often forget to rest, even though this may be their one day off for a while. If you are a 1L, take a breath and take care of yourself. Plan to sleep in at least one day and plan to at least do one self-care activity.
We should all take a beat and recognize our contributions; not just to society but also to our own well-being and longevity. Your mere presence in your space and the advice you offer helps one student help the next person become better. The decision to come to law school, to pursue your aspirations, but also to grow and learn is a love letter to yourself. Your recognition that your mental and physical health are essential to sustaining you as you age is imperative. If you do not care for yourself, who will?
Happy Labor Day!
